What type of permit can I apply for online?

Can I pay for my permit online?

Yes. You can pay either by checking account (no fee) or credit/debit card (with fee).

Can I apply online, but make my payment in person at the permits office?

Yes, payments can be accepted at the One Stop Shop(Room 100) at 417 E. Fayette St. Please note that during the pandemic the office is closed to the public but, you can drop your payment in a drop box outside of the office.

How do I receive my permit?

A copy of your permit will be sent to you via email once payment is processed.

How soon will I get my permit?

  • 1. Applications submitted for electrical, plumbing, HVAC&R, gas, extensions, and amendments to change or add contractors that do not require agency review will be ready for payment within one hour of submission, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • 2. For all other permit types, applications submitted by 9:00 AM will receive an approval or response by 2:00 PM the same business day. Those submitted after 9:00 AM will receive an approval or response by 2:00 PM the following business day.
  • 3. Regardless of your permit type, if there is a special circumstance (e.g., your application needs to be referred to another agency, or there is a tag on your property), a staff member will send a message to you within the timeframes listed in #2.

Why isn’t the system pulling up my contractor’s name when I try to enter it?

In order to add a contractor to your application in the ePermits system, that contractor must first create an online account and register their license in the ePermits system. Check with your contractor to confirm that he or she has created an account and registered their license. Ensure you have the correct name and license number. If you still can’t add your contractor, call 443-984-1809 for additional assistance.

How do I contact the permits office if I have a question, or if I have an additional document I need to upload?

The message board can be used to contact your permit reviewer, or to upload additional documents. Click the “Contact Us” button next to the relevant permit in the Permit Application List to initiate a message. If you have a message waiting from a staff member, the button will read “Message”.
